There's nothing quite like spending the afternoon in a cosy pub eating delicious food with a nice selection of drinks during the winter months. And one Liverpool Echo reporter recently stumbled up a rather idyllic pub while enjoying an afternoon stroll on the outskirts of Merseyside.

Hannah Rees wrote: "My partner and I were travelling through Ormskirk when we came across The Dog and Gun Inn on Long Lane, Aughton. We popped in for a pint after becoming intrigued by its traditional-looking exterior and immediately knew we'd made the right call.

"The pub has a real community feel, with a few groups chatting over drinks and food. It's also dog friendly, so customers can bring their four-legged friends along.". Highlighting the pub's great selection of drinks, Hannah added that they served Birra Moretti, Cruzcampo, Amstel, Guinness and more. And not just that, they also have a selection of cask ales which cost just £2.90 on Monday from 5pm.

Hannah continued: "It has a traditional, yet modern, interior with plenty of character. Although it isn't a huge pub, it has a booth and several tables dotted around a main and side room. "As soon as we sat down with our pints at a table in the main room we knew we'd made a mistake. Our heads were turned every time a staff member walked out of the kitchen, holding on to a plate of delicious smelling food. We were that disappointed we returned a few weeks later to try the food for ourselves.".
