With the festive season over, this week sees the majority of children in the UK return to school after more than a fortnight at home. With that, brings anxiety for many parents - particularly those whose children face an important in year in their education.
Mum and home educator Hannah Canavan says there are five other options, which she detailed on TikTok. "If your dreading sending your child back to school after the Christmas holidays, there are alternatives," she explained in a caption. Whether it be separation anxiety, lack of faith in the mainstream system, or if you have a child with special educational needs, Hannah may have a solution that's worth exploring.
Hannah says one option is to home educate as she has done with her own three children. "Most people understandably need time to get their head around the idea," she admitted, before advising "binging" her home education playlists for more information [on her TikTok account].
Alternatively, there is 'felxischool', which is a combination of part-time home education and part-time schooling. "This can work well, but it's at the discretion of the headteacher and it often makes them nervous," adds Hannah. Similarly there is the option of dual enrolment, which comprises part-time 'normal' schooling if desired, whilst having an online teaching element too. "It doesn't require an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) and can be a great way to get funded alternative provision for kids who aren't coping at school," Hannah shares.
