New England manager Thomas Tuchel stepped foot on St George's Park soil for the first time on Monday. Tuchel, 51, was unveiled as Gareth Southgate's permanent successor as far back as October 16 but only officially started his role on January 1. The German, who becomes only the third foreigner to manage England, was handed a lucrative 18-month contract worth around £7.5million.
His deal with the FA runs until the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, a tournament which Tuchel has been tasked with winning. Victory across Canada, Mexico and the United States would end England's agonising 60-year wait to lift a major trophy. Tuchel was appointed two thirds of the way through Lee Carsley's time as interim manager. The under-21 boss, who's now returned to his previous role, stepped up to take charges of England's Nations League matches in September, October, and November, as the Three Lions won their group and secured promotion back to League A.
After his contract began New Year's Day, Tuchel is now in England and watched three Premier League games in person over the weekend. The former Chelsea manager saw Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-1 before nipping down to Brighton for their 1-1 draw with Arsenal.
On Sunday, Tuchel watched Liverpool's thrilling 2-2 draw with Manchester United. The 51-year-old was joined by Anthony Barry, who'll be his assistant for England after working alongside Tuchel at both Chelsea and Bayern Munich, and FA technical director John McDermott.
