James Cameron has warned fans that the third Avatar movie will be the ‘boldest yet’. Officially named Avatar: Fire and Ash, the film has reportedly been pushed back nine times since its original release date was back in 2015, 10 years ago. In a recent interview, the Academy Award winning director spoke on what to expect from the upcoming threequel.
He made it clear his goal was not to copy what he had created in the two previous films but to make unpredictable ‘brave choices’ to ensure audiences leave the cinema stunned. ‘We could be getting high on our own supply here, and everybody who looks at it [the new film] goes, “F**k, that’s not what I signed up for,”‘ James explained.
He continued Empire Magazine: ‘But if you’re not making brave choices, you’re wasting everybody’s time and money. That alone is not sufficient to create success, but it’s necessary. You’ve got to break the mould every fricking time.’. The majority of the cast will return to fight the human colonisers for a third time, with Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington set to carry on Neytiri and Jake Sully’s story.
Avatar remains the highest grossing film of all time, earning a staggering $2.9billion (£2.3bn) at box office. 2022 saw the release of the highly anticipated Avatar: The Way Of Water, which also smashed the box office grossing a total of $2.3bn (£1.8bn).
The global franchise success adds immense pressure on Cameron’s back in the run-up to the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash: ‘You can get your blood up in this movie. But what excites me as an artist who recently turned 70 and has kind of done all that stuff is not only the opportunity to get to do it again, but to get to a level of character and intrigue you haven’t seen before in an Avatar movie.’.
