Man Utd are a mess and could be dragged into a relegation battle under Ruben Amorim

Manchester United are heading towards a world of pain. There’s a sentence you never thought you’d read. But, having sat through a 90-minute blunder-filled Boxing Day no-show at Molineux, it’s difficult to draw any other conclusion. New boss Ruben Amorim is presiding over an accident-in-waiting.
Yes, the points tally as the Premier League table stands gives the Red Devils a buffer which probably explains why the ‘R’ word remains unspoken. But this current crop of players are showing all the classic hallmarks of a club careering towards disaster.
This isn’t a time for medal-rattling - so please forgive this Festive indulgence. At least 15 years of my career has been spent watching Midlands football - where a different team routinely finds itself battling the drop almost on an annual basis. And it’s about this time of the campaign when you can tell whether they are in for a rough ride or not. It must be said that out of the two sides on show in the Black Country, one showed a method, the ability and desire necessary for group of players willing to fight their way to three points.
And the other was United. Let’s be honest here. Amorim’s best moment during his tenure so far came at the Etihad. Manchester City are at something of a crossroads - and it was a meltdown in the final stages of the derby - sparked by Matheus Nunes’s backpass - that paved the way for an improbable triumph.
