Man Utd crisis deepens as Newcastle end 11-year run - 5 talking points

Newcastle dominated from minute one to secure a fourth successive win as they plunged Manchester United further into crisis. Their victory was a first at Old Trafford for 11 years - a time when David Moyes was in the midst of his one and only season in Manchester. Ruben Amorim has now lost his last three matches at home as the Red Devils endured yet more pain to finish off 2024.
Alexander Isak had the Magpies in front within four minutes as the Swede wandered into the box to head home unmarked as the three centre-halves looked on. Defending balls into the box has been a major issue for the Manchester outfit and that trend continued.
Joelinton nodded home a second for the visitors, albeit there was a debate over whether the ball went in off his arm, before Sandro Tonali saw a close range effort bounce off the post. Newcastle were utterly dominant and Amorim began changing his side before the half-time whistle as the Red Devils were booed off.
There was a Manchester reaction in the second-half as they re-emerged with fresh energy but were unable to find the goal that would've sparked the contest. Harry Maguire came closest, his header cannoning off the post. Amorim's side continued to look dangerous without threatening as Martin Dubravka, back at the club he once represented, was largely untroubled. Newcastle were by no means the dominant force they were in the first-half but managed the game well enough to go close on the top four.
