Meta is planning to cut approximately 5% of its staff, deemed as the lowest performers, according to Bloomberg. An internal memo from chief executive Mark Zuckerberg revealed his decision to "decided to raise the bar on performance management" in order to "move out low-performers faster".

The memo indicated that while the company typically manages out those not meeting expectations over a year, it now plans to implement "more extensive performance-based cuts" sooner. It's reported that Meta already cut about 5% of low performers in 2024, but aims for a 10% target in its current "performance cycle", meaning it intends to "exit approximately another 5% of our current employees who have been with the company long enough to receive a performance rating".

In his note, Zuckerberg assured that Meta would offer "provide generous severance". This policy comes amid significant changes at the tech giant, including last week's announcement that it will cease using fact-checkers, initially in the US, and transition to a Community Notes system similar to X, citing political bias among fact-checkers.

Zuckerberg also announced a reduction in automated content moderation systems, arguing they were causing excessive content removal and amounted to "censorship", with the changes aiming to restore "free expression" on its platforms. Online safety advocates have slammed Meta's latest move, with warnings it could let misinformation and harmful content run rampant on its platforms. Moreover, the tech giant has indicated it will cease its diversity, equality and inclusion efforts.
