The National Lottery's New Year's Eve Big Bash has left viewers fuming, with many claiming the celebration show is too 'woke.'. Presented by Fleur East and Vernon Kay, the annual special kicked off with a performance from former Little Mix star Perrie Edwards, which viewers were quick to applaud on social media.
YouTuber KSI, singer Olly Alexander and Loose Women panellist Coleen Nolan were amongst the other celebrities to grace the OVO Wembley Arena stage during the two-hour programme. However, as the show introduced segments highlighting the disproportionate access to the arts and physical education for underprivileged and disabled children, viewers were quick to issue complaints.
Expressing their opinion on X, formerly Twitter, one person penned: "Well I've stuck with this program for an hour, but it's absolute garbage TV. As most things these days it's just a tick box woke TV rubbish. Back to YouTube ...". Another chimed in "What a load of bulls*** this is. Same old box-ticking b******s" with a third replying: "100%. It’s so annoying. I’ve had enough and turned over…".
A fourth disgruntled person voiced out: "The National Lottery New Year's Big Bash on ITV is everything that is wrong with this country. An Absolute woke abomination.". But that particular comment had viewers taking exception, with one replying: "What's woke about it?" and another fired back "Woke abomination?! Oh! Sit down[..]".
Despite the impassioned critiques, fans have widely praised the musical guests. Hot on the foot of Perrie, the arena was treated to short sets from Craig David, Olly Alexander, Britain's Got Talent winner Sydnie Christmas, indie rock band Blossoms and the House Gospel Choir.
