Netflix has increased its subscription prices in the UK, with customers set to pay an extra £12 a year. The price hikes come after it raised subscription costs in the US, Canada, Argentina and Portugal last month. The new UK price for a Standard subscription without adverts - the platform's most popular plan - has risen by £2 to £12.99 a month. According to reports, a spokesperson said the price rise would allow the streaming giant to "continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members".

Other levels will also be rising with Netflix's Standard plan with adverts and its Premium plan rising by £1 a month to £5.99 and £18.99 respectively. This marks the first time Netflix has increased the cost of its cheapest ad-supported plan. The platform is also raising the cost of its Extra Member add-ons by £1 which will see the Standard subscription add-on go from from £4.99 to £5.99, while the Standard subscription with adverts will go from £3.99 to £4.99.

Netflix has updated its website to reflect the changes, which will impact both new and existing customers. The company previously axed its no-frills Basic plan in a bid to push more users to its ad tier. Netflix said it would be notifying its members soon to inform them of the new prices. The price hikes will be introduced based on their billing cycle. If you're currently subscribed, look out for an email from the service detailing how the changes will impact you.

The streamer said: "We will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix.". Sky is giving away a free Netflix subscription with its new TV bundles, including the £15 Essential TV plan. Sky Stream lets members watch live and on-demand TV content without a satellite dish or aerial and includes hit shows like The Day of the Jackal and the upcoming second season of Squid Game.

This is the second time the streaming giant has increased prices in the last two years, having done so in October 2023. Netflix also began enforcing a password-sharing ban in May 2023 in the UK and the US, which led to millions of new signups over the next 12 months. Netflix said that it had more than 300million customers at the end of 2024. The firm said it expected to add 9.6million new subscribers between October and December 2024. However, it far surpassed that figure as it gained nearly 19million in the final few months of last year.
