Despite not winning any money himself as part of his stint on BBC show The Traitors, Alexander Dragonetti won the nation's hearts instead. From his quirky singing, to his energetic badminton playing and kind heart, the 38-year-old ex-British diplomat quickly became a fan favourite after he returned to the show following his train exit in episode one. And to show how much they adore him, fans decided to raise £60,000 to the Mencap charity, which Alexander said he would give money to if he won the show.
Alexander wanted to donate to the charity, who work with people with learning disabilities, as they helped his late brother when he was alive. To talk about the generous reaction from the public, Alexander appeared on ITV show Good Morning Britain this week with Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley. A clip of the interview that was shared online saw Kate tell Alexander: "What was so special was the way you talked about your brother, who obviously had all these challenges, and what he gave you.
"I think that's often something that people forget when they have a sibling or a parent or someone in their live that had those challenges, that actually the person who is more neurotypical or however you phrase it, is winning as well. Tell us what he meant to you.". Alexander replied: "My relationship with him was everything, he was just the happiest guy. People say this about people but he lit up rooms... He was just so much cooler than his brother and I loved that.".
Talking about summer camps that Mencap used to run, Alexander also said it was 'one of the happiest periods of his life' and that he loved 'being there' for his brother. "I could see my whole life I'd be his protector," he said. "That would be my job. That was so important to me, and therefore his loss was equally really hard.". Richard then asked how the charity helped out his brother. Talking again about the summer camps, Alexander said: "That was probably the week he looked forward to the most, because he'd be infinitely silly and he'd have infinite attention. He just loved that.
"And what it meant to my parents is that they got a break for a week and they could go and do some other stuff. That week even in amongst a year matters so much.". The video, which was shared on the GMB X account, has racked up hundreds of likes. One person replied: "What a lovely young man," while another said he was "probably the nicest man in the UK".
