Two thirds of Brits are receiving fewer Christmas cards - and most don't care

Research involving 2,000 UK adults who celebrate Christmas found that six out of 10 are receiving fewer Christmas cards and over three quarters aren't bothered about it. Over 40% actually hope this downward trend continues for the rest of Christmas in 2024 and choosing not to send a single card this year. Almost half say they only feel obliged to send cards because they receive them from others.
According to the research, nearly half believe Christmas cards lack sincerity, while 40% don't think they are as important as they used to be. The research went on to find 72% believe the cost of buying and posting cards could be one reason for their demise, while 60% reckon the rise in digital communication might be making them obsolete.
Once the festive season is over, one in 10 people will simply toss the Christmas cards they've received into the bin. The research was commissioned by mobile game Clash Royale after it yesterday invited visitors to Boxpark Shoreditch to shred their unwanted Christmas cards, in return for in-game rewards.
A spokesperson said: "Christmas cards might once have been the highlight of the holiday season, but it seems many are happy to let this tradition fade like tinsel on a tired old tree.". "But for those that do receive these nuisance cards, I'm pleased that we can help get rid of them and give players a reward for doing so.".
