Anyone with services such as Sky, Virgin Media or EE TV will see two popular channels disappearing from their screens later this month. It's been confirmed that the popular Eurosports services are being taken off air with the closure taking place on February 28. Most TV contracts include these channels for free and allow users to watch content such as tennis, motorsport and even action from the Olympic games.

Once things shut down, all of the sporting action will move across the TNT Sports and the Discovery+ services instead. Both of these platforms cost extra - so bills may increase - although it's worth checking contracts as some Sky deals do include Discovery+ as standard. The changes are big made by Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) who currently owns Eurosport along with Discovery and TNT Sports. It's yet to be confirmed what content will be integrated into which services once the closure comes into force or if a new service will launch to accommodate the extra coverage.

One thing we do know is that, whilst the update won't please Sky, EE and Virgin users, there is better news better news for all those with Freeview. WBD says it will boost some of its free-to-view sports offerings, which are available via the Quest channel. That means Freeview customers will soon be able to watch every MotoGP Sprint race along with a new weekly cycling show plus highlights from the Giro d’Italia and La Vuelta a España cycle races.

"Combining Eurosport and TNT Sports content in the UK and Ireland will enable us to offer a single, premium viewing experience for sports fans," said Scott Young, Group SVP, Content, Production & Business Operations, WBD Sports Europe. "This move in the UK and Ireland will also continue to best deliver value for our leagues and federation partners, as we continue our 35 years plus commitment to investment and championing of sport on our screens, which remains a fundamental part of the success of grassroots through to elite.

“TNT Sports will also continue to bring more content to fans on Warner Bros. Discovery’s free-to-air channel Quest. In 2025, this will include broadcasting every MotoGP Sprint race, adding to existing live Bennetts British Superbikes coverage, a brand-new weekly cycling show covering all key moments of the season, continue highlights of the Giro d’Italia and La Vuelta a España, plus premiere a range of new sports documentaries.”.
