The UK's best burger has officially been crowned - and it's probably not what you would expect. Last week, Stewart Down won the acclaimed National Burger Of The Year Award for Black Bear Burger's signature Miso Bacon Burger. When I heard about the winning feast - featuring two 45-day aged beef patties, cheese, smoked bacon, miso butter mayo and onion sandwiched between a sesame seed bun - I simply had to try it for myself to see if it truly deserves the accolade.

The burger joint has sites across London including in Exmouth Market, Brixton, Victoria, Canary Wharf, Shoreditch and Camden. I went down to Brixton market to try out the latest award-winning creation once and for all. My initial impressions were very pleasant - and they certainly didn't hold back on portion sizes. As I sat down, I was presented with a blackboard-esque menu featuring their four burgers: The Classic, the iconic Black Bear, the Briskit Burger - and, finally, the burger that I had travelled in such anticipation to try, the Miso Bacon Burger.

Wasting no time, I ordered their now famous burger and was immediately very impressed when it arrived. FEMAIL reporter Poppy Atkinson Gibson tried the best burger in the UK - and gave the ultimate verdict. In front of me was placed a dripping double patty burger with melted cheese, smoked bacon with golden-coloured miso mayonnaise oozing out the sides. The whole stack was so huge I wondered how I would be able to fit it in my mouth - but, luckily, after slicing down the centre I was finally able to tackle the monster.

My first thought was the sesame bun was an interesting choice and reminded me of McDonald's but the quality of the burger itself couldn't be further from the fast-food chain. While the bun itself didn't add a great deal to the meal, the burger was delicious. It was at once juicy and flavoursome - and cooked medium rare so that it dripped down my chin. The cheese was a nice salty addition, while the miso mayo added a depth of earthy flavour that was a nice change.

For £12.50, it was one of the best burgers I've had in a while and I'd be more than happy to eat another. But to test out how it stood up to Chef Down's other creations, I also tried their classic Black Bear Burger which had the added sweet tang of onion jam and garlic mayo. While I wasn't blown away by the miso addition to the humble mayonnaise whilst I wolfed down the award-winning burger, I soon realised that it was a genius addition.
![[Other than the addition of the miso, the burger was like most on offer with cheese and bacon so I wouldn't consider Black Bear completely re-invented the humble burger but it was still a joy to eat]](https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2025/02/18/07/95297869-14405779-Other_than_the_addition_of_the_miso_the_burger_was_like_most_on_-a-15_1739864932946.jpg)
Poppy headed down to Black Bear Burgers in Brixton to try the famous Miso Bacon Burger. Having tried regular and garlic mayo in the burger restaurant's other offerings, I concluded they now all seemed too sweet and superficial in contrast to the exciting, umami Japanese flavour. The brisket burger was also a work of art, tasting like it had come straight off the barbecue and filled with luxurious strips of meat. And to make sure I had really got to grips with everything on their menu I also tried their fried chicken burger with hot honey, Habanero honey mayo, shredded lettuce and pickles.
Despite it looking delicious and the chicken being crispy and juicy, the hot honey overpowered anything else and it wasn't as flavoursome as I had hoped for. So, do I think the UK's best burger is worth the hype?. For the price and the quality of the burger it absolutely was. The miso mayo was a nice change and awakened my taste buds to the over-sweetened mayonnaise alternatives offered by the eatery.
The patties were juicy and tender and the bun was inoffensive, allowing the burger to take centre stage. Black Bear Burgers offers The Classic which was a regular burger with cheese, burger sauce and shredded pickles, the Black Bear which included smoked bacon, onion jam and garlic mayo and a Briskit Burger which used beer braised briskit alongside their beef patty. Other than the addition of the miso, the burger was like most on offer with cheese and bacon so I wouldn't consider it massively groundbreaking - nevertheless, it was still a joy to eat.
And the judges at the National Burger of the Year award clearly agreed, giving it the top gong. Burger expert Mr Down beat his fellow chefs in a close-run competition and his trophy follows the chef and restaurant owner's win at the ten-year anniversary Champion of Champions event last September, where he was presented with the Bloggers' Choice Award. Of his win Mr Down revealed he was surprised having already tried twice before to take the top spot.
