No more detaiil about her death was given, but one fan wrote: "Aw. [songwriter] Valerie Simpson was just asking for prayers for her . May she rest in peace.". Alfa joined Chic in 1977 after being encouraged to audition as a background vocalist. She went onto appear in the band's debut album which landed one number one with Dance, Dance, Dance, with Everybody Dance also charting. She went onto become one of the lead vocalist after Norma Jean Wright left just a year later.
The band went on to score huge hits such as 1978's Le Freak, Good Times and My Forbidden Lover (1979). Alfa appeared on a number of TV shows at the height of the band's fame - including Top of the Pops - and worked on Chic-produced sessions of Diana Ross and Sister Sledge hits.
Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, who created the band, disolved the original Chic in 1983. Alfa went on to tour internationally with Luther Vandross through the 80s. Chic has since been re-established with new band members and has been touring in recent years.
