If you’re not quite ready to bid goodbye to Gavin and Stacey, you’re not the only one—but there’s still reason to hope that we’ll see our favourite characters again one day. On Christmas Day, a whopping 12.5million people tuned in for the last-ever episode of the beloved BBC comedy, 17 years after it premiered.
Penned by James Corden and Ruth Jones, while the series has amassed a huge following over three series and three festive specials, the creators have already confirmed there shall be no more. However, execs are keen to strike while the iron is hot and coax whatever future material they can out of the Gavin and Stacey universe.
According to sources, this could include a spin-off with two iconic characters. An insider told The Sun: ‘It would be madness to close the door on such a hit.’. It is therefore thought that Dawn and Pete, played by Julia Davis and Adrian Scarborough, respectively, could eventually get their own series.
A TV source added: ‘James and Ruth are adamant this is the last of Gavin and Stacey, but, when a programme achieves such results, execs will always hope for more. ‘At the end of the day, ratings talk, and it would be madness to close the door on such a hit forever when fans loved it so much.
‘Bosses have had casual discussions about whether options like a Pete and Dawn spin-off could work.’. On why a spin-off with the forever bickering married couple could work, they added that Dawn and Pete were ‘always more separate from the main group’.
