High School Musical fans have declared their lives have been "lies" after finding out this Zac Efron fact. The Disney Channel original movie first aired in 2006 and has been a cultural phenomenon for nearly two decades. Its success led to two sequels and even a spin-off mockumentary musical drama years later. The trilogy also launched the careers of its main cast, including Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and Zac Efron.

However, even after all these years, there are still some lesser-known facts about the film that even the most dedicated fans might not know. A viral TikTok video recently revealed one such fact related to Zac's portrayal of basketball prodigy turned singing superstar Troy Bolton. The video humorously shows a man lip-syncing to the start of one of the movie's most famous songs, Breaking Free. But after Vanessa Hudgens' character, Gabriella Montez sings her first lines, something very strange happens - Troy's voice comes in again, but a completely different person sings it.

The text on the video reads: "Disney casting a completely different singer for Troy literally mid-song.". This revelation left fans of the musical series baffled in the comments, as many had no idea that Zac Efron did not sing most of the songs in the first High School Musical movie. Instead, Drew Seeley primarily provided the singing voice for Troy. One person commented: "This is how I learn Zac Efron wasn't the one singing in the HSM movies? " Another shared their surprise: "Not me at 24 years old just now finding out it wasn't Zac actually singing. I'm embarrassed for myself." A third expressed their shock: "I was an adult when I found out Zac didn't sing those parts. Everything I'd ever known was a lie!".

In the first High School Musical, Zac's vocal contributions were minimal, with Drew Seeley providing most of the singing for Troy's character. Zac only sang the opening lines of the movie's first musical number, Start of Something New, and the first sentence of Breaking Free. The reason given was that Zac's baritone voice didn't match the tenor range expected for Troy when the songs were written. In a candid 2007 interview, Zac described the situation as "awkward" but was pleased that Drew received recognition for his vocal talent.

Nevertheless, Zac took over the singing duties for the sequels, High School Musical 2 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year. He emphasised the importance of this change in the same interview, stating: "That was a very huge point for me. I had to put my foot down and fight to get my voice on these tracks.".
