Netflix fans are adding an upcoming film that has been dubbed as the 'new John Wick' to their watchlist immediately, even before it is made available to stream. The company has announced that new title, Demon City, will be added to the service later this month. It's confirmed release date is February 27 and viewers are already lining it up to watch as soon as it lands. Netflix released a trailer overnight and it quickly created excitement as well as comparisons to the hit action franchise starring Keanu Reeves.
Demon City is actually a live-action adaptation of Oni Goroshi, a comic book series which ran from 2020 to November 2024. The revenge tragedy unfolds in the provincial city of Shinjo, following a hitman seeking vengeance after losing his wife and daughter. Known for its intense and brutal depiction of violence, the comic captivated readers and is now being brought to life on screen. Toma Ikuta takes on the role of Shuhei Sakata, a legendary hitman on a quest for vengeance. Just as he is about to clean up his act for his family, the mysterious organisation Kimen-gumi, a shadowy group of masked criminals, murders his wife and daughter, pinning the blame on him and sullying his name.
Shot in the head, he miraculously survives but falls into a coma. Twelve years later, the Kimen-gumi attacks him again, but his dormant killer instinct awakens, setting him on an epic course of revenge. However, what awaits him is a truth that threatens to completely alter his destiny. Footage from the trailer teases the heart-pounding action and emotional depth of Sakata's journey. While the story and premise of the film does share similarities with John Wick, fans are also comparing it to the likes of other classic revenge films. One person claimed it looks like "Old Boy meets The Crow." Another also placed it alongside Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. All these comparisons haven't tempered any anticipation though as many took to social media to react to the trailer.
One, replying to Netflix's post on X, said: "Netflix continues their strong streak in bringing us great action movies." While another simply stated: "Adding to watch list now!" While a third posted: "So, it's the new John Wick." Another, posting in the comments section on YouTube said: "Not exactly what I expected to see, when I clicked on this video.....". Demon City is streaming on Netflix from February 27.
