Saving money and holidays abroad don’t usually go hand in hand, but thankfully Europe is blessed with a number of budget destinations. There are some lesser-known gems — like Vilnius, in Lithuania — but if you prefer to take the road well travelled, you might be surprised to find that some of Europe’s most popular cities are also its most affordable.
From booking flights on the cheapest day to snapping up travel deals in the sales, there are a number of ways you can save money on your holiday, and limiting your stay to a weekend will save costs while you’re there too. These nine holiday spots are reachable by affordable flights, and we’ve taken into account the cost of food and drink when you get there too.
Travel advice service ABTA has named Hungary one of the top 10 destinations for tourists in 2025, and the capital of Budapest is a great place to spend a few days, with no shortage of activities to keep you busy. A visit to the imposing Hungarian Parliament, with its neo-Gothic architecture, should be top of your list (be sure to book in advance as tickets sell out quickly), while Buda Castle and St Stephen’s Basilica are also well worth a visit.
Later, you can relax with an evening river cruise along the Danube River, which separates the Buda part of the city from Pest, or take a dip in the Szechenyi Budapest, one of the largest spa baths in Europe.
